Local nonprofits Los Alamos Flea and the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden are collaborating on a series of movie nights this summer. The film lineup for these special evenings comprises thought-provoking documentaries that shed light on the challenges and triumphs within the food system.
The movies selected for the screens include Food Chains on July 29, Sustainable on August 12 and Seed: The Untold Story on August 26. The movie nights will feature different guest winemakers who will be present to enhance the experience.
Each evening will begin at 7pm with a wine tasting and reception, showcasing various local winemakers and highlighting the Botanic Garden’s mission and programs. The $25 ticket price includes the wine tasting hour prior to the film.
Guests may also opt to purchase ahead of time a picnic basket and/or additional bottle of wine to enjoy during the screening. Wines by Final Girl and picnic baskets by Clean Slate Wine Bar. More details and ordering info here.
This Saturday, July 29th, the series kicks off with the screening of Food Chains with guest winemakers Casa Dumetz, Sea Creatures Wines and Sweetzer Cellars. Food Chains reveals the human cost in our food supply and the complicity of large buyers of produce like fast food and supermarkets.
The film focuses on a group of tomato pickers whose story is one of hope and promise for the triumph of morality over corporate greed — to ensure a dignified life for farm workers and a more humane, transparent food chain.
Mark your calendar in for these upcoming films in August:
August 12 – Sustainable
With guest winemakers Rockets Red Wines, Loubud Wine, Koehler Wines
A vital investigation of the economic and environmental instability of America’s food system, from the agricultural issues we face — soil loss, water depletion, climate change, pesticide use — to the community of leaders who are determined to fix it. Sustainable is a film about the land, the people who work it and what must be done to sustain it for future generations.
August 26 – Seed: The Untold Story
With guest winemakers Marbeso, Grassini Family Vineyards
The film follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food.
Funds raised from these events will be put to excellent use in supporting the educational and horticultural programs of the SYV Botanic Garden and in creating educational opportunities and scholarships for students interested in adopting and promoting sustainable food systems and practices. Edible Santa Barbara is proud to be a media sponsor for this film series event.
